How Shopify Transaction Fees Work

Shopify charges transaction fees when merchants use third-party payment gateways instead of Shopify Payments. The exact fee depends on the Shopify subscription plan and the payment processor chosen by the merchant.

Shopify Payments removes the additional Shopify transaction fee entirely, but credit card processing fees still apply to every card transaction regardless of gateway.

Shopify Payments vs PayPal Fees

Shopify Payments removes the Shopify transaction fee layer, while PayPal triggers both PayPal's own processing fee and Shopify's additional third-party transaction fee — creating double-layer costs.

How Shopify Calculates Transaction Fees

Shopify transaction fees are calculated as a percentage of the total order value. Payment processors separately charge their own credit card processing fees on top. When using a third-party gateway, merchants pay both layers — the gateway's processing fee and Shopify's additional transaction fee.

Total Shopify Cost = Gateway Processing Fee + Shopify Transaction Fee

Example Calculation: Basic Shopify + PayPal

Effective Shopify Fee Rate

The effective fee rate combines payment processing, Shopify transaction fees, currency conversion, refund losses, chargeback costs, and app fees to give merchants a true profitability estimate.

Effective Fee Rate = Total Processing Costs ÷ Gross Revenue × 100

Localized Shopify Transaction Fee Examples

United States Example

A US Shopify store on the Basic plan processing a $150 order through Shopify Payments pays approximately $4.65 in processing fees (2.9% + $0.30), with no additional Shopify transaction fee. Using PayPal instead adds a 2% Shopify transaction fee — raising total fees to about $7.84 on the same order.

United Kingdom Example

A UK Shopify merchant using PayPal may pay additional third-party transaction fees if Shopify Payments is not enabled. UK Shopify Payments rates are lower than US rates (2.0% + 25p on Basic), making Shopify Payments a particularly cost-effective choice for GBP-denominated stores with high card volume.

India Example

Indian Shopify sellers often compare Shopify Payments alternatives because payment gateway availability differs by region. Merchants in India commonly integrate Razorpay, PayU, or Cashfree as third-party gateways. All third-party gateway usage triggers Shopify's additional transaction fee (2% on Basic), so Indian merchants should factor both gateway processing costs and Shopify transaction fees into margin calculations.

Shopify Transaction Fee Calculator FAQ

A Shopify transaction fee is an additional fee charged when merchants use third-party payment gateways instead of Shopify Payments. It is separate from the gateway's own processing fee.

Shopify transaction fees depend on plan and gateway. Basic plan merchants pay 2% extra for third-party gateways. Grow pays 1%, Advanced pays 0.5%, and Plus pays variable rates.

Yes. Shopify Payments removes the extra Shopify transaction fee entirely, although credit card processing fees still apply to every order.

Multiply order value by the percentage processing rate, add the fixed fee, then add any Shopify third-party transaction fee percentage if applicable.

Shopify payment processing rates vary by country, currency, banking infrastructure, and local payment regulations.

Yes. Using PayPal as a third-party gateway means merchants pay PayPal's processing fee plus Shopify's additional transaction fee. Shopify Payments eliminates this double layer.

Shopify does not always return transaction fees on refunds. Processing fees from payment gateways are often non-refundable, leaving merchants absorbing fee losses on returned orders.

Advanced and Plus have the lowest percentage fees, but Basic or Grow can be cheaper at lower revenue levels because subscription costs are lower.
