What Are eBay Seller Fees?
eBay seller fees are the charges that eBay Inc. collects from sellers when they list and sell items on the eBay marketplace. Every transaction on eBay involves a combination of listing fees and selling fees, which together determine the total cost of selling. Understanding these fees is essential for calculating your net profit and setting competitive prices.
eBay's fee structure is managed through eBay Managed Payments, the platform's integrated payment processing system that replaced PayPal as the default payment method in 2023. Under Managed Payments, eBay processes all buyer payments directly, and seller fees are automatically deducted from your payout.
How eBay Final Value Fees Work
The final value fee is the primary cost of selling on eBay. It is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount, which includes the item price, shipping charges, and any applicable sales tax. For most categories, the final value fee ranges from 13.25% to 15% of the total order amount.
In addition to the percentage based fee, eBay charges a per order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10.00 or less, and $0.40 for orders over $10.00. This flat fee applies to every completed transaction regardless of item category or sale price.
Final value fee rates vary by item category. For example, electronics typically incur a 13.25% rate, while clothing and shoes may be charged at 15%. Sellers with an eBay Store subscription may benefit from reduced rates in certain categories.
Understanding Insertion Fees
Insertion fees are charged when you create a listing on eBay. Most sellers receive up to 250 zero insertion fee listings per month. Once this free monthly allowance is exceeded, eBay charges $0.35 per listing. Sellers with eBay Store subscriptions (Starter, Basic, Premium, Anchor, or Enterprise) receive a higher monthly allotment of free listings.
Promoted Listings & Advertising Fees
Promoted Listings are eBay's optional advertising tools that boost your item's visibility in search results. With Promoted Listings Standard, you set an ad rate (typically 2% to 10% of the sale price), and you only pay the fee if the buyer clicks on your promoted listing and completes a purchase within 30 days.
For sellers who want guaranteed placement, Promoted Listings Advanced operates on a cost per click (CPC) model similar to Google Ads, where you bid for top of search placement and pay per click regardless of whether a sale occurs.
Promoted Listings Standard
- Fee Type: Pay on Sale (Risk Free)
- Ad Rate: 2% to 10% (You choose)
- Charged only if: Buyer clicks and purchases within 30 days
Promoted Listings Advanced
- Fee Type: Cost Per Click (CPC)
- Bid Model: Keyword bidding and budget
- Charged only if: Buyer clicks your ad (even if no sale occurs)
International Selling Fees
Selling to buyers outside your registered country incurs an additional international fee of approximately 1.65% of the total sale amount. This cross border transaction fee covers eBay's costs for facilitating international commerce.
If eBay needs to convert your payment to a different currency, a currency conversion fee of approximately 3% may also apply. Sellers can minimize these costs by using eBay's Global Shipping Program (GSP) or by listing directly on international marketplaces like eBay UK, eBay Germany, or eBay Australia.
How to Reduce Your eBay Fees
There are several strategies sellers use to lower their overall eBay costs:
Store subscribers receive more free monthly listings and reduced final value fee rates. Check our Store Fee Calculator to find your best ROI tier.
Sellers maintaining Top Rated status who offer one day handling and 30 day free returns get a 10% discount on their final value fees.
Listing items in the correct category ensures appropriate rates. Certain categories have dramatically lower fees (e.g. musical instruments at 6.35%).
High volume merchants with Anchor or Enterprise stores may qualify for custom fee structures negotiated directly with eBay.
