eBay Fees for NFTs and Digital Items: Final Value Rate, Prohibited Digital Goods, and Authentication Rules
eBay charges casual sellers 13.6% Final Value Fee on NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and digital items listed in the designated NFT or digital goods categories up to $7,500, then 2.35% above $7,500.
An NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is defined as a blockchain-registered digital certificate of ownership that represents a unique digital asset, such as a digital artwork, a music recording, a video clip, a collectible, or a virtual item in a game. Unlike fungible tokens (such as cryptocurrencies where each unit is interchangeable), each NFT is unique and non-interchangeable with any other token. eBay's NFT marketplace requires sellers to list certified NFTs from eBay-verified blockchain sources.
What Is the eBay Final Value Fee for NFTs?
The eBay Final Value Fee for NFTs listed in eBay's NFT marketplace is 13.6% for casual sellers on sales up to $7,500, then 2.35% above $7,500. Store subscribers pay 12.7% up to $2,500, then 2.35% above. The standard category rate applies to NFTs without a specialty rate reduction. eBay launched NFT trading in 2021 as part of its expansion into blockchain-based digital collectibles.
eBay's NFT marketplace launched with a curated selection of certified NFTs from sports organizations, entertainment studios, and digital artists. Early NFT listings on eBay included sports highlights from Wayne Gretzky's digital collectibles line, music NFTs, and gaming item NFTs. eBay verifies the blockchain source and authenticity of NFTs before they are listed.
The 13.6% Final Value Fee on NFTs is higher than primary NFT marketplace fees. OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace, charges 2.5% in marketplace fees. Rarible charges 1% to 2%. eBay's 13.6% rate is 5 to 6 times higher than NFT-specific marketplaces. eBay's larger general buyer pool is the offsetting advantage for sellers who list NFTs on eBay.
NFT sellers on eBay must verify the blockchain provenance of listed NFTs and provide the token address, blockchain network (Ethereum, Solana, Polygon), and NFT contract details in the listing. eBay's system validates the NFT data before publishing the listing.
What Digital Items Are Prohibited on eBay?
eBay prohibits the sale of most digital goods through standard listings: software license keys (standalone serial numbers without physical media), digital download codes for games or apps, gift card codes delivered digitally, e-book downloads, and stock photo licenses. These are prohibited because digital delivery is unverifiable post-sale, creating high chargeback and fraud risk. NFTs listed through eBay's certified NFT program are the primary permitted digital item category.
Software serial numbers and license keys are prohibited because they cannot be verified as unused before sale. A buyer who purchases a software key and finds it already activated has no way to verify whether the key was used before purchase or whether eBay's buyer protection applies. The fraud risk in this category is too high for eBay's standard listing framework.
Digital download codes for video games, DLC (downloadable content), and app purchases are prohibited for the same reason: the code's redemption status cannot be verified independently. Sellers who list redeemed codes as unactivated commit fraud; buyers have no recourse beyond eBay's Money Back Guarantee.
Physical software packages (boxed software with installation disc, physical game cartridges with the game code embedded in the cartridge) are permitted and are distinct from digital keys. A physical Nintendo Switch game cartridge is permitted. A code-only Nintendo Switch digital download code is not.
How Does eBay Verify NFT Authenticity?
eBay verifies NFT authenticity by checking the listed token against the blockchain ledger using the token address and contract address provided by the seller. The blockchain ledger is a public, immutable record of all NFT transactions. eBay's verification system confirms the NFT exists at the stated address, is associated with the stated creator wallet, and has not been previously transferred to another wallet outside the seller's ownership.
The blockchain verification process is automated within eBay's NFT listing system. Sellers who provide a valid token address from a supported blockchain network receive automatic verification before the listing goes live. Invalid or unverifiable token addresses result in listing rejection.
NFT transfer after a sale is the delivery mechanism. When an eBay NFT sale completes, the seller transfers the NFT from their digital wallet to the buyer's digital wallet address using the standard blockchain transfer process for the applicable network. The buyer provides their wallet address during checkout. The blockchain records the transfer permanently, providing irrefutable delivery confirmation.
NFT delivery failure (where the seller does not transfer the NFT after payment) is handled under eBay's Money Back Guarantee as an item not received. The buyer files a not-received claim. eBay requires the seller to provide blockchain transfer confirmation showing delivery to the buyer's wallet. Sellers who cannot provide this confirmation receive a refund decision against them.
What Are eBay Fees for Selling Video Game Virtual Items?
Virtual in-game items (game currency, character skins, in-game weapons, account boosts) for video games are generally prohibited on eBay because they represent a digital entitlement that is transferred outside eBay's trackable delivery system. Some exceptions exist for physical gaming accessories that happen to include digital bonuses. Sellers who list virtual in-game items risk listing removal and account suspension under eBay's digital goods policy.
The prohibition on virtual in-game items exists because their delivery cannot be verified through eBay's standard tracking and confirmation systems. A buyer who pays for in-game currency and claims it was never delivered has no trackable evidence to dispute. The fraud potential is high because the transaction leaves no physical delivery record.
Accounts for online games and services are also prohibited. Selling a Fortnite account, a World of Warcraft account, or a League of Legends account with in-game items violates eBay's account trading prohibition and the terms of service of all major game publishers. Sellers who list game accounts face listing removal.
Physical game cards that contain in-game currency codes (such as Roblox physical gift cards, Nintendo eShop physical cards) are permitted as physical items with a visible, unused code. The distinction from prohibited digital delivery is that the physical card is the product; the code on the card is its content. Physical delivery of the card satisfies eBay's delivery requirement.
